How Polka Dot Dresses Have Made A Comeback

Back in the 1920’s fashion was all about fur coats, fringe, feather head bands and polka dot dresses. The polka dot dress was sought after by the youth of 1920, worn as house and garden dresses. Typically, these dresses had an array of dots that were large to dots the size of a pencil tip. Dresses back in the 20’s had full skirts with a cinched in waist and v neck line. Once polka dot dresses came about Disney also produced a character known as Minnie Mouse that wears a polka dotted skirt. Before long everywhere had the design and celebrities started to wear it.

Dresses Throughout The Last 100 Years

100 years of dresses, dresses and more dresses. This time length might seem as though its a lot but in reality one hundred years ago was 1920. In the beginning, I mentioned how this era consisted of fur coats, fringe, feather head bands and polka dot dresses, it also consisted of dresses below the knees and the neckline having a small v cut. As the years pass by every era brought about different ideas on how to accentuate dresses and the style change.

  • 20s not only consisted of polka dots but sleeveless gowns with a drop waist
  • 30s was a time diverse patterns and textures
  • 40s started suit dresses
  • 50s brought tea length dresses that accentuated the waist and fuller skirts
  • 60s rave was the sheath dresses and white gloves
  • 70s took a mini skirt and made whats called the jumper dress
  • 80s brought back the polka dots and accent colors
  • 90s polished spaghetti strap dresses
  • 00s had fabrics and patterns you wouldnt think to put together
  • 10s came with bodycon dresses with simple designs
  • 20s was a new era that chose sleek cutouts and knit fabrics

Looking at the list above it shows that the past for fashion brings itself to the present, whether it stays or goes. Society circles back to the basic, it may go from polka dots to fringe to slits in the dresses.

The Polka Dot Dress Remade

Fashion statements are made at the Grammys, BET Awards, Oscars and Emmys. All of these showcase celebrities and their array of gowns, dresses, suits and more. At the 2020 Globes a female celebrity wore an unexpected dress to the event. It was a beautiful polka dot dress consisting of an off the shoulder, three quarter sleeves top and floor length fitted skirt with multiple sized polka dots. There are different creations of polka dot dresses, especially now where many of the modern day dresses have slits up the sides, knee length or higher and contain different colors. There are no more puffy sleeves, frilly lace or even crazy designs. Polka dot dresses consist of simpler designs, pastel colors and subtle sleeves. The dots are typically seen as a creation for older people or simply unflattering on a woman’s body. This is not the truth, polka dots have a multitude of designs that have been altered and created to not make a woman look boxy but to feature her shape.

There are many types of polka dot dresses not only with the dots or colors but with how the dress fits onto someone. We have made dresses that are A-line, Body-con, Sheath, Slip and Strapless, all of these different styles give women of any age and body type the chance to enjoy this vintage style. This design on a dress can be complimentary while giving a woman a new look. Polka dots will never truly go away, they might disappear for a couple years but eventually they will come back in style in unimaginable ways.
