Floral Bridesmaid Dresses – Totally Cute or Utterly Over The Top?

First coming into style in the middle ages as a symbol of wealth and ostentatious fashion sense, floral patterns on clothes have always been well loved and probably aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. And it’s no secret why! Honestly, is there anything cuter – or more comfortable – than a short sundress in the springtime, white fabric covered in pink roses and yellow lilies and purple tulips and practically oozing all the goodness and wonder of the season? If there is, I certainly haven’t found it yet! But is there an occasion when a love of floral dresses may be taken too far? You probably wouldn’t wear one to your own wedding – but what about dressing up your bridesmaids in them?

The trend of floral bridesmaid dresses first started making waves in 2013 and has slowly picked up more and more popularity as time has gone on. In the early months of this year, the trend was featured in multiple blog and magazine articles where writers spoke about how to get the “perfect floral look” for your upcoming nuptials or posted pictures for “floral wedding inspiration.” The issue that no one seemed to be tackling at all was… are floral bridesmaid dresses actually a good idea?

From where I’m sitting, there are definitely some drawbacks.

While floral dresses are no doubt cute and fashionable in the spring or summer months, they don’t make much sense for a wedding later on in the year. If your heart is set on that winter wonderland ceremony, you might want to reconsider putting your bridesmaids in dresses that make them look like they just dropped in from Easter Sunday.

If you’re planning on a church wedding, something to consider is how casual floral dresses usually are. Sure, you can try and class them up by choosing dresses that are full length or sleeved, like this Navy Blue Neckline Open Back Ruched Bust Evening Dress, but that runs the risk of ruining the fun and trendy vibe and making it look a little… vintage. Like your great-grandma’s couch kind of vintage.

The last – and, in my opinion, most significant – issue with floral bridesmaid dresses is the busyness of a floral pattern. It’s supposed to be a day all about you and the person you’re marrying. When you stand up in front of your guests and say your vows, you want every eye in the room to be on you! But floral patterns can be awfully distracting, especially when compared to a white dress. They naturally draw the eye, pulling attention away from where it should be – the bride!

Of course, there are plenty of reasons to choose floral patterns for your bridesmaid dresses. They add just the right touch of flirty fun to really make the special girls in your life look incredible while keeping them comfortable enough to dance the night away at your reception. For outdoor weddings, the dresses will blend in perfectly with nature and add a touch of nymph-like magic. Plus, there’s no denying it, floral dresses are just soooooo cute!

At the end of the day, you know what’s best for you and your wedding. Whether it’s floral, paisley, color blocked, or something else entirely, this is your day and the choice lies with you!
